Pet End of Life Services in Costa Mesa CA Area

Aging pets have so much to offer your family, and it can be challenging to make choices about your pet’s care towards the end of their life. Serious illnesses can also come on suddenly, giving you little time to make big decisions about your pet’s health and care. At All Creatures Care Cottage Veterinary Hospital in Costa Mesa, California, we strive to make the decision-making process easier by walking with you through each step of the way and providing compassionate, respectful end-of-life services.

Signs your pet may be ready for end-of-life care

Euthanasia is a gentle and compassionate option for pets who are suffering. If your pet has a severe illness or difficulty performing and enjoying life’s daily tasks, Dr. Rand Spongberg will have an honest discussion with you about your options to keep your pet comfortable. In some cases, euthanasia might be the best option for your pet and family’s needs. Signs that it might be time to consider euthanasia include:

  • No longer eating
  • Frequent incontinence
  • Chronic pain that is not managed with medications or other treatments such as laser therapy
  • Weight loss and/or dehydration due to chronic vomiting or diarrhea
  • Labored breathing or persistent coughing
  • Difficulty with standing and walking
  • Loss of interest in their favorite activities, such as walking, playing, or being petted by family members

Caring for your pet during their final stages of life

If you decide that euthanasia is the best choice for your pet, we will discuss your options. You are welcome to stay with your pet through their final moments, but we also understand if that will be too difficult for you. We will also discuss your options for how to handle your pet after they have passed. Some pet parents opt to bury their animal following local ordinances, or your pet can be cremated either privately or communally.

Facing the end of life of your beloved pet is an extremely difficult and sad time, but you do not have to face it alone. The team at All Creatures Care Veterinary Cottage is here for you and your pet when the time comes. Our office can be reached at (949) 430-7576.
